If you're taking the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge at Boy Scout Summer Camp, you'll need to prepare a survival kit. During your merit badge classes, the instructor will be checking the kit for completeness. If you're not sure what something is, ask your patrol leader about it. If he can't help, ask an adult leader. In a nutshell, the boy scout wilderness survival kit helps you make sure you're always prepared if you get caught in the wilderness.
Note that some of the things on the list can actually be purchased as a unit or separately. For example, Amazon.com and the Total Resources International 130-Piece Outdoor First Aid Kit in EVA Case that provides many of the items required for the kit. As well, Gander Mountain sells a whistle, signal mirror, compass, flint, and waterproof match holder 5 in 1 survival aid. Look for a bright orange unit about 4 inches long. Wal-Mart was also a good place to find a lot of these supplies inexpensively.
Finally, it's helpful to team up with other scouts because some of the items can be purchased and split between 2 or 3 scouts (a box of butterfly bandaids, for example). Your survival kit will fit into a large fanny pack. If you happen to have a back pack with a removable fanny pack top, they work great. Note that scouts DO NOT need to have a back pack for summer camp.

Horrable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thank you very much
This is a really great list, I am going to summer camp tomorrow and i just realized i needed a survival kit for wilderness survival! The only thing it needs is a lightsource.
this got my parents off my back
Really like the cotton balls and vaseline. I hadn't seen that before. I tried it on my drive way and it burned for 4 minutes.
thanks this is a great kit
Neosporin created weird reactions I'd use polysporin but this worked out for me well.
Thanks for the list. It is great just needs a flashlight... Thank You
very helpful! although I do think that a knife and some type of light source(glow sticks, flashlight)be on the list.
Thank you very much. Took this merit badge at summer camp in colorado and it was a great kit
this is what i am doing tomoorrow itll be fun!
this is 10/10 we are not necessarily doing wilderness survival for overnight trips. I want my son to be prepared if he gets lost. He needs to know what to do and be able to survive for possibly several days. Thanks it is awesome!
just needs water purification and a little more food and your good to go. :)
this got me the merit baadge and i now have all i need
do you need a sleeping bag for the badge
Good but too detailed. You wouldnt need more than 2 sources for starting a fire. but overall, good..
Compleatly awsome, scout usa rocks said it all for me!
i love the idea of more than one way to light a fire in case one fails 10/10 for me and i like the idea of paracord i use it a lot is rope tying and lashing but i will admit it is a bit big if you are going for one or two days or as a hike love it !
you don't need somthing that big for a over nighter
Overall good list. The small bottle of hand sanitizer can also be used to start a fire with wet tinder. Duck tape makes great mole skin. I didn't see any water purification. I am going to borrow your list for my troop! Thanks
Good list... Looks similar to what I take for annual Boundary Waters trips... mine is in an extra large fanny pack. I just prune it down and change with the seasons ( ski trips, summer camp, etc.)
Joseph,
You can fit it into any pack the key is moderation, if your going on a day hike you do not need the quantities you would want to take on a 5 day trek. I would suggest building a small pack/baggie that contains your survival items
This really will help me get this merit badge, and my life merit badge
needs more
