This delicious variation on cobbler was discovered by our troop chef for the 2005 District Cook-o-ree. The 2005 fall cook-o-ree had an iron chef competition, much like the Iron Chef on The Food Network, where each chef had a set of required ingredients as well as a set of optional ingredients. The chef was then required to make an entree and a desert to be judged for the event. Our Troop Guide and Life Scout stepped up to the challenge; the entire troop helped prepare the three dutch oven extravaganza.
This Simple Apple Bisquick Cobbler (Apple Cobbler with a twist) was the Dutch Oven Desert that came from the competition. We've tried it several other times, and it's been a big hit every time.
2 cans Apple Pie filling
2 cups Bisquick
Some Milk
Some Cinnamon
Butter (about 1/2 a stick)
Honey
Preheat the Dutch Oven. Place the butter in the bottom of the dutch oven and let melt, stirring to cover the entire bottom. Be careful not to burn the butter. Put the apple pie filling into the dutch oven. In a bowl, mix the milk into the bisquick until the batter about as thick as cake batter. Add a lot of cinnamon - you want to use enough cinnamon to kill the biscuit taste of the bisquick. When you think you've added enough cinnamon, add a little more. Pour the mixture over the top of the pie filling. Cover the dutch oven and bake for about 1 hour until the top is light brown; 6 coals on bottom, 12 coals on top.
