Fall Cook-o-ree '05
2005 Fall Kettle Country District Cook-o-ree
At the 2005 District Cook-o-ree on October 7-9, 2005, Troop 765 won 3rd place in the Iron Chef Competition. The competition was very similar to the Iron Chef show on the Food Network. Each troop selected a chef, and was given a set of required ingredients including carrots, pork & beans, ground beef, bisquick, and canned corn.
Our Troop Guide and Life scout showed his leadership by carefully planning the menu and each scout in the troop helped prepare the food - from cutting the vegetables, boiling noodles, watching the dutch ovens, and so on.
The winning menu was a modified Texas Hash, Buttered Noodle Biscuits, and Apple Bisquick Pie (Troop Original).
The cook-o-ree was a blast. The morning activites covered food safety, backback cooking, omelette preparation, dutch oven cooking, and fire starting. The afternoon lightened up, and we had marshmallow throwing, cucumber launching from a 10ft canon, noodle bridge building, pancacke flipping and more.
For dinner, one of our First Class scouts carved the boy scout emblem into two potato halves as the centerpiece of the meal. Other scouts helped out by chopping vegetables, boiling noodles, tending the charcoal on the dutch ovens, checking the apple pie, and so on.
The presentation to the judges was flawless. It was a "lantern-light" dinner. The texas hash was garnished with parsley; the apple pie drizzled with honey. The judges even asked for the recipes.
To finish off the weekend, the troop provided the Sunday morning colorguard for the camp and led the opening prayer for Sunday's scout's own service.
